If you are planning an asbestos abatement project in your home, it is important that you take the proper precautions when handling asbestos to prevent any risk to your health or the health of your family. Follow the guidelines below to ensure your safety when handling asbestos.
Make sure to wear the appropriate protective clothing and equipment.
Wet down the material before you begin and at regular intervals during the work. Lightly spray surfaces with water or a 1:10 polyvinyl acetate water solution or with low-pressure water from a garden hose. Keep the asbestos wet until it is ready to be packaged for transport.
Use non-powered hand tools as these create less dust, and produce waste chips that are coarser.
Pull out any nails to help remove sheeting with minimal breakage.
Carefully lower the sheets to the ground and stack them on two layers of polythene sheeting.
Minimize cutting or breaking of the asbestos.
Remove and dispose of personal protective equipment.
Shower and wash your hair immediately afterward and, regardless of whether or not you wore gloves, thoroughly clean your hands and fingernails to remove any dust and asbestos that may be present on your body.
Use high-pressure water jets as this will increase the spread of loose fibres.
Slide one sheet over the surface of another.
Use power tools, abrasive cutting or sanding discs, or compressed air on asbestos, as these will contribute to airborne debris.
Dry-sand, wire-brush, or scrape surfaces.
Walk on corrugated asbestos, people have been injured by falling through old asbestos.
Leave asbestos products around the garden.
