What Is Lead Abatement

Prepping for Lead Abatement

Lead abatement is the process of safely reducing paint hazards. Lead paint abatement can be extremely dangerous when it is not done correctly, so it is best to hire a professional to remove lead paint from either your home or business.

A Starting Point

If you do hire a contractor, make sure they are taking all the necessary precautions, this article provides some basic principles concerning lead paint abatement.

Before the abatement begins, you must always adhere to the following:

• Make sure to test all family members, especially children, for lead poisoning.

• Have the property checked by a professional abatement contractor

• Move children and pregnant women that are at risk until the work is finished.

• Post warning signs at entrances to the work area.

• Seal off all doors, windows, ducts, etc., using 6-mil plastic sheeting.

• Remove all the carpets, furniture, drapes, etc.

• Cover everything remaining with drop cloths. Don’t use newspaper or fabric drop cloths.

• Limit access to the area. No one enters without wearing the proper protective equipment.

• If any part of a surface contains lead paint, the entire surface has to be abated. This is especially true when dealing with chipped and flaky paint.

• Choose an abatement method that creates the least amount of dust.

• Use adequate barriers to stop lead dust from entering the rest of the property. Do not use paper wall coverings, fresh paint, or contact paper, as these are not considered durable barriers.

• DO NOT dry sand or scrape; use a power grinder or electric plane; burn with a torch or heat gun; sandblast; or use any chemical removers that may contain methylene chloride.
